About WECA
The Westchester Emergency Communications Association (WECA) is an Amateur (Ham) Radio club based in Westchester County, New York, about 25 miles north of New York City. We are dedicated to serving the public through amateur radio and supporting amateurs in developing their skills.
Our Mission
WECA provides emergency and public service communications, sponsors free license education, maintains a network of repeaters, and fosters a welcoming community for radio operators of all experience levels. We work closely with the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services and the American Red Cross.
Our History
On the first Friday night in early April 1972, five men met in Tarrytown, NY, at William T. Knott’s (W2QGH / K2AVP, SK) home to form what is now the Westchester Emergency Communications Association. These founders were ham radio hobbyists who decided to start the club “for the continuation of the Civil Defense Radio network in Westchester County, NY.” More than fifty years later, WECA continues that tradition of public service.
